Remove Oil Stains from Concrete – Treat Deep-Seated Oil Contamination

Professional cleaning of an oil stain on a concrete basement floor with Omnixol FX100

Oil on concrete is often more persistent than it initially appears. Concrete has a porous structure. Motor oil, heating oil, diesel and other mineral oil-based liquids can therefore not only remain on the surface but penetrate deep into the pores and capillaries of the concrete.

Simply wiping the surface or degreasing it superficially is often not sufficient for older or deeply absorbed oil stains. For thorough cleaning, the contamination must be mobilized from within the concrete and subsequently removed from the surface.

In the following guide, we show you step by step how oil-contaminated concrete can be deep-cleaned with Omnixol FX100 and subsequently treated.

1. Absorb Fresh and Free Oil First

If liquid oil is still present on the concrete, it should first be absorbed and removed as completely as possible.

For this purpose, use Bestabsorb Universal Oil Binder . The binder absorbs oil-containing liquids and helps prevent free oil from spreading further across the surface or penetrating deeper into the concrete.

Saturated binder must then be disposed of properly in accordance with the contamination it has absorbed.

For dried or older oil stains, preparation and deep cleaning can begin directly.

2. Prepare the Concrete Surface

Before treatment, the concrete surface should be:

  • as dry as possible,
  • free from dust,
  • free from loose contamination
  • and fully accessible

Coatings, paints or sealers can prevent Omnixol FX100 from penetrating into the concrete.

If oil-resistant, water-repellent or barrier coatings are present, they must be removed from the affected area if they prevent access to the absorbent concrete underneath.

3. Warm the Concrete Before Cleaning

For deeply penetrated oil contamination, we recommend warming the affected area to at least approximately 20 °C before treatment.

The increased temperature can help mobilize oil-containing components stored within the building material and supports the subsequent deep-cleaning process.

A relative humidity of ideally below 50 % also supports subsequent drying.

Important: Open flames, smoking and other ignition sources must be avoided in oil-contaminated areas.

4. Deep-Clean Oil Stains with Omnixol FX100

For oil-contaminated concrete, use Omnixol FX100 Concentrate .

The mixing ratio depends on the severity and depth of the contamination:

  • heavy, older or deep-seated oil stains: approximately 1:10
  • normal or lighter contamination: up to approximately 1:20

Warm water is recommended where possible.

Apply the prepared cleaning solution generously to the affected concrete surface using a suitable pressure sprayer, masonry brush or paint brush.

The concrete must be sufficiently saturated and not merely wetted at the surface.

Omnixol FX100 should be able to penetrate the pores and capillaries of the concrete in order to reach oil-containing residues located deeper within the material.

5. Allow Omnixol FX100 to Act for Approximately 24 Hours

After application, Omnixol FX100 should be allowed to act for approximately 24 hours.

During this time, oil-containing components are dispersed and emulsified. This allows contamination to be transported from the pores and capillaries of the concrete to the surface.

Milky-white or oily residues may become visible during this process.

This emergence is a typical part of the cleaning process and indicates that mobilized components of the contamination are reaching the surface.

6. Remove Residues That Have Emerged

After the contact time, residues present on the surface should be removed thoroughly.

Depending on the size and condition of the surface, they can be:

  • absorbed with suitable cloths,
  • wiped away
  • or removed using a suitable wet vacuum

The treated concrete surface must then be allowed to dry completely again.

7. Repeat the Treatment for Deep or Older Oil Stains if Necessary

The longer oil has been absorbed into concrete, the deeper the contamination may be located within the material.

In many cases, one thorough treatment with Omnixol FX100 is sufficient. However, older, highly visible or deeply penetrated oil stains may require a second treatment.

The second application follows the same principle:

  1. Apply Omnixol FX100 generously.
  2. Allow it to act for approximately 24 hours.
  3. Remove residues that have emerged.
  4. Allow the concrete to dry completely again.

8. What to Do with Very Deeply Contaminated Concrete

In older or particularly severe cases, oil contamination may be located considerably deeper within the concrete than only in the uppermost layer.

In such cases, mechanical preparation may initially be advisable, for example by grinding a dense or heavily contaminated surface. This opens the concrete and allows Omnixol FX100 to penetrate the mineral substrate more effectively.

For solid concrete components, concrete walls or very deep-seated contamination, targeted drilling may additionally be used.

Through these drill holes, Omnixol FX100 can be introduced specifically deeper into the concrete in order to reach oil-containing residues located further inside the material.

This method is particularly suitable where surface treatment alone does not sufficiently reach the contaminated areas.

Important: In floor slabs, load-bearing components or structures of unknown construction, drilling must not be carried out without proper assessment. It must first be checked whether pipes, waterproofing, reinforcement or other construction layers could be affected.

For large-scale or very deep contamination, professional assessment is advisable.

9. How Much Omnixol FX100 Is Required?

As a general guideline, 1 liter of Omnixol FX100 Concentrate is sufficient for approximately 10 m² of concrete surface for a single treatment.

Actual consumption depends, among other factors, on:

  • the absorbency of the concrete,
  • the age of the contamination,
  • the depth of the contamination,
  • the amount of oil absorbed
  • and the number of applications required.

For highly absorbent or deeply contaminated concrete, sufficient material should be planned for complete treatment of the affected surface.

10. When Can Concrete Be Coated or Sealed Again?

After cleaning has been completed, the concrete must dry completely.

New coatings or sealers should only be applied once no relevant oil or odor contamination is still emerging from the substrate.

If the surface is to receive long-term protection afterwards, apply Omnixol Wall & Floor Sealer to suitable mineral surfaces after successful cleaning and complete drying.

It forms an additional protective layer, helps consolidate suitable mineral substrates and acts as an additional odor-inhibiting barrier.

The following sequence always applies:

Deep-clean with Omnixol FX100 → remove residues → allow to dry completely → confirm that the surface is free from odor → apply Omnixol Wall & Floor Sealer.

What Should Be Considered When Oil Odor Comes from Concrete?

Even if the visible oil stain has largely disappeared, oil-containing components may still remain deeper within the concrete.

These can continue to release odors into the surrounding area, particularly when the surface is heated.

The visible discoloration alone should therefore not be used to assess the result. The decisive factor is whether oil or significant odor contamination is still being released from the concrete after complete drying.

The Omnixol Approach to Oil Stains on Concrete

For thorough treatment, we recommend the following sequence:

  1. Absorb free oil - using Bestabsorb Universal Oil Binder
  2. Prepare the concrete, remove coatings if necessary and dry the surface
  3. Deep-clean penetrated oil - using Omnixol FX100 Concentrate
  4. Allow Omnixol FX100 to act for approximately 24 hours
  5. Completely remove residues that have emerged
  6. Repeat the treatment if necessary
  7. Allow the concrete to dry completely and assess the result
  8. Finally protect suitable mineral surfaces - using Omnixol Wall & Floor Sealer
