Remove Diesel Odor from Cars

Professional cleaning of a diesel-contaminated vehicle trunk with Omnixol CX80

Spilled diesel can cause an extremely persistent odor inside a vehicle. It becomes particularly problematic when the fuel has penetrated into carpets, seat upholstery, trunk linings or insulation materials.

Simply ventilating the vehicle or masking the odor is usually not sufficient in such cases. It is important to loosen the diesel residues as completely as possible from the affected materials and then remove them from the vehicle.

In the following guide, we show you step by step how to treat diesel odor in a vehicle interior.

1. Remove Affected Vehicle Parts

First remove all parts that can be taken out without major effort. This makes it much easier to clean both the affected materials and the areas underneath them thoroughly.

These may include, for example:

  • floor mats
  • trunk mats
  • loose carpets
  • covers and inserts
  • removable upholstery

If free diesel is still present on a surface, it should first be absorbed and removed as completely as possible before wet cleaning begins.

2. Clean Affected Areas with Omnixol CX80

For cleaning carpets, upholstery and other suitable surfaces, use Omnixol CX80 Concentrate .

For intensive cleaning, we recommend a mixing ratio of 1 part Omnixol CX80 to 10 parts water.

Warm water is recommended where possible.

Apply the cleaning solution evenly to the affected areas using a sponge, suitable brush or sprayer.

On carpets and upholstery, Omnixol CX80 must be worked sufficiently into the material. Light surface wetting alone is often not sufficient where diesel has penetrated deeper into the material.

3. Allow Omnixol CX80 to Act for 4 to 5 Hours

After working Omnixol CX80 into the material, allow it to act for approximately 4 to 5 hours.

During this time, oil- and grease-containing residues are loosened and mobilized from fibers and porous materials.

On sensitive or unknown materials, Omnixol CX80 should first be tested in an inconspicuous area for material compatibility and colorfastness before large-area application.

4. Remove Loosened Residues with a Wet Vacuum or Extraction Cleaner

After the contact time, extract the contaminated cleaning solution as thoroughly as possible from carpets, upholstery or linings using a wet vacuum or extraction cleaner.

This step is particularly important: the loosened diesel residues should not remain in the material but should be removed together with the cleaning solution.

In cases of heavy contamination, treatment with Omnixol CX80 can subsequently be repeated a second time.

5. Clean Removed Carpets and Upholstery Separately

Removed vehicle parts should also be thoroughly treated with Omnixol CX80.

Work the cleaning solution sufficiently into carpets or upholstery, allow Omnixol CX80 to act and then remove the loosened residues using a wet vacuum or extraction cleaner.

Also inspect the surfaces underneath the removed parts. Diesel may have penetrated through carpets and upholstery into underlying insulation materials, foam or the vehicle floor.

6. What to Do if Diesel Has Run Beneath the Carpet

If diesel has penetrated beneath the vehicle carpet or into underlying insulation and foam materials, cleaning only the visible surface is often not sufficient.

Carpets and trim should be lifted or removed as far as possible so that the areas underneath can also be accessed.

Insulation materials that are heavily saturated with diesel may no longer be sufficiently cleanable. In such cases, replacement of the affected material may be necessary.

7. Clean Smooth Surfaces

Suitable plastic parts and other smooth surfaces can also be cleaned with Omnixol CX80.

Apply the cleaning solution, loosen the contamination and then remove the residues using a clean cloth or suitable vacuum.

On plastics, painted surfaces and sensitive materials, Omnixol CX80 should always be tested in an inconspicuous area first.

8. Allow the Vehicle to Dry Completely

After cleaning, upholstery, carpets, linings and underlying materials must be allowed to dry completely.

Ensure the best possible air circulation. Doors or windows may be opened where the surroundings allow this to be done safely.

The vehicle should only be fully reassembled or returned to normal use once all treated materials are completely dry.

9. Neutralize Remaining Diesel Odor with Omnixol BX

After the actual cleaning process, odor-causing substances may still remain inside the vehicle. These may have settled on trim, the headliner, upholstery and other surfaces.

After complete cleaning and drying, use Omnixol BX Odor Neutralizer .

Omnixol BX is applied to odor-contaminated areas and supports the breakdown of remaining odor-causing substances.

The correct sequence is:

  1. Loosen and remove diesel residues with Omnixol CX80.
  2. Thoroughly extract the cleaning solution and loosened residues.
  3. Allow all treated materials to dry completely.
  4. Neutralize remaining odor contamination with Omnixol BX.

Omnixol BX does not replace the preceding cleaning with Omnixol CX80 where diesel contamination is still present.

Why Does Diesel Odor Remain in a Car for So Long?

Diesel can penetrate deeply into textile and porous materials. Even when a surface already appears visually clean, diesel-containing residues may still remain inside carpets, upholstery or insulation materials.

These residues can continue to release odor-causing components into the vehicle interior over an extended period.

This is why diesel odor may initially become weaker after surface cleaning but later become noticeable again.

The Omnixol Approach to Diesel Odor in Vehicles

For thorough treatment, we recommend the following sequence:

  1. Absorb as much free diesel as possible
  2. Remove detachable carpets, mats and vehicle parts
  3. Clean affected materials with Omnixol CX80 at a ratio of 1:10
  4. Allow Omnixol CX80 to act for approximately 4 to 5 hours
  5. Remove loosened residues using a wet vacuum or extraction cleaner
  6. Allow the vehicle and treated materials to dry completely
  7. Neutralize remaining odor contamination with Omnixol BX Odor Neutralizer

This approach does more than treat the noticeable diesel odor. First, the actual diesel contamination is removed from the affected materials as completely as possible. Only then are the remaining odors neutralized.
